Serigraphy Printmaking: Identity
“What Fruit is That?”
The task for this project was to use “Identity” as a theme and explore the screen printing process.
I decided to take an out-of-the-box approach to this project instead of pursuing a personal identity; I chose to express the identifying characteristics of some fruits when cut in half.
I started by sketching the overall design for the final piece. First, I sketched an organic shape and split it into six organic sections. From there, I researched and looked at different fruits cut in half and picked the three fruits I would feature in my design. I chose an apple, a strawberry, and a lime. I then sketched the profile of each fruit when cut in half into one of the six sections, making sure none of the same fruits were touching; from there, I added an organic outline to keep the sections as one but also separate.
The next step was to separate the three colored layers for printing. I resketched the image into three separate layers. The cut fruits' details, the fruits' base, and the organic shape and outlines.
The final step was to choose the colors and start the printing process.
I chose red, green, and yellow for the fruit colors and black for the outlines. I used a spot blending technique with the red and green, putting sections of the colors down and pulling the squeegee through them so they blended together.
